Position Summary

The Public Health Institute is seeking a full-time Quality Control Specialist II for the Cancer Registry of Greater California (CRGC). This position is located in Sacramento, CA.

Under the direction of the Data Quality Control Director for the Cancer Registry of Greater California (CRGC), the incumbent is directly responsible for designing, coordinating and conducting data quality control audits within the CRGC. This includes but is not limited to recoding, casefinding, reabstracting, case transmit and special interest audits as identified. Also serves as a resource participant in SEER quality control activities. Additionally, under the direction of the CRGC Data Quality Control Director, this position provides assistance to the California central registry in conducting recoding audits, and also assists the central registry in identifying reporting facilities meeting audit criteria for reabstracting and casefinding audits. This position assists the California Central Registry in preparing for quality control audits performed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As needed, this position may also conduct visual editing, resolve SEER edit errors and run SEER edit reports. Please note that this position is contingent upon our SEER contract award and with an expected start date of May 1, 2018.

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Designs, coordinates, and conducts quality control audits (recoding, reabstracting, case transmit and casefinding) within the CRGC, including the preparation of reports to the Data Quality Control Director, CRGC Senior Director of Operations, and other CRGC staff as appropriate.
  • Analyzes audit results and provides information to other CRGC staff for training and compliance.
  • Assists the central registry in conducting recoding audits, assists the central registry in
    identifying reporting facilities meeting the criteria for reabstracting and casefinding audits
  • Maintains audit procedures and works with CRGC staff to ensure that reabstracting, recoding and casefinding software, are updated and tested to ensure its readiness and effectiveness
  • Develops and implements action plan to fix discrepancies discovered during audits in the data base including recommending global fixes to the central registry.
  • Participates in SEER quality control activities as required.
  • Collaborates and assists the central registry to accommodate and facilitate the CDC quality control audits.
  • Other duties as assigned, which could include, but is not limited to visual editing, resolving SEER edit errors, running SEER edit reports.
Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Health Education, Biological Sciences, Medical Records or other allied health related fields. Additional equivalent work experience in the cancer registry field may be considered in lieu of the required degree on a year for year basis.
  • Certification by the National Cancer Registrars Association as a Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR)
  • Minimum five years of experience conducting cancer data quality control or data analysis, central registry experience preferred Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical computations and understand basic statistical methodologies
  • Ability to analyze compiled results, understand the significance of the average and/or percentages calculated, and develop a recommended course of action.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, relate well with others in difficult situations and the ability to resolve issues in a timely manner.
  • Proficient in utilizing the full suite of Microsoft Office products, Access experience preferred
  • Ability to exercise good organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to multi-task multiple projects efficiently.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Project management experience preferred
  • Successful candidate must be able to pass criminal background check.
  • Must have available transportation and ability to travel extensively and be flexible in scheduling travel for on-site audits, lasting approximately 3-4 days per on-site audit. Audits occur approximately 4-6 times per year.

This is an exempt position and the salary is commensurate with experience.
