Position Summary

PHI is seeking a part-time Communication Intern (15-18 hours per week) to support the Berkeley Media Studies Group communication team. The Berkeley Media Studies Group (BMSG), a project of the Public Health Institute, is committed to helping public health professionals and community advocates engage the news media strategically to advance healthy public policies. The Communication Intern will collaborate closely with staff in our Berkeley, CA office, and will be supervised remotely by the Senior Manager of Communication and Digital Strategy based in Missouri.

The Communication Intern, under the supervision and guidance of the Senior Manager of Communication and Digital Strategy, will support BMSG’s online and social media strategy and will contribute to the organization’s daily and weekly news monitoring. A primary responsibility of the Communication Intern will be to create and disseminate concise news digests (to see examples, sign up here) that are shared with staff, clients and advocates around the country to inform them about the news on topics including health equity and racial justice, junk food marketing to Latinos, African Americans and other communities of color, soda regulation, tobacco control, reproductive justice, and the prevention of sexual, domestic and community-level violence.

The intern will also assist with maintaining BMSG’s social media presence and with occasional blogging or other communications tasks.

  • Perform daily and weekly scans of the news about relevant public health issues and summarize the news coverage in concise digests (70%)
  • Draft and schedule content for BMSG’s social media channels, including Twitter and Facebook (20%)
  • Weekly meetings with the Senior Manager of Communication and Digital Strategy (5%)
  • Other tasks as assigned (5%)
Minimum Qualifications


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Currently enrolled in an Undergraduate or Graduate Degree Program in public health, public policy, journalism, the social sciences, or a related field is required. Strong interest in public health, media and communications, and a commitment to social justice.
  • Strong writing skills and the ability to write clearly and succinctly for a variety of audiences, often under deadline pressure.
  • Strong attention to detail, ability to take initiative and good organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other staff members.
  • Available to start work by 8:30 a.m. PST due to news monitoring schedule.
  • Experience with social media management platforms (e.g. Hootsuite) and email-marketing tools (e.g. Constant Contact) is preferred.
  • Experience with Photoshop is a plus.

This is an non-exempt position and the salary is commensurate with experience.
